Richard Li: Successful Entreprenuer

Richard Li Tzar Kai, noted Chinese businessman, is the son of Li Ka-Shing, one of the most affluent men in Asia. The successful entrepreneur was born on November 8, 1966 in Hong Kong to one of the country’s wealthiest families. The silver spoon youngster was thought to follow in his father’s footsteps. He surprised the world by going out on his own.

Richard Li’s introduction the Hong Kong business community came via a loan from his father. Li, who took an interest in technology in his early twenties, decided to make use of technological advancements to create modes for superior home entertainment. Backed by his father, Li started StarTV, Asia’s first network that broadcasted via satellite.

In 1995, five years after its launch, Richard Li sold StarTV to Rupert Murdoch for $950 million. He then used the sum as a start up for Pacific Century CyberWorks. The company, now known as PCCW, has been Li’s pet project since.

PCCW is now ranked as the largest telecommunications operation in Hong Kong and the largest IPTV provider in the world. Richard Li serves as the company’s chairman and executive director to this day.

Richard Li, born into money, could have taken the easy road and walked the line set by his family. Instead, he walked his own path. Because of this, he has virtually become the Midas in the telecommunications entertainment industry.
