Visiting the Unit Prior to Your Medical Interview Short Listing

When you read the advertisement for the job, you will discover the invite to meet specified members of the section. It is a healthy idea to at least make some enquiries – even if you don’t intend to actually visit. For one thing it will ensure that your name is on somebody’s radar.

You will obviously need to make an appointment and not just turn up and say “I’m Here!” If the post is a competitive one then it could be possible for 50-100 applicants to all turn up and say “I’m Here!” which would cause chaos for the unit. Some departments will routinely decide to not allow applicants to visit, unless they have been shortlisted.

The principal objective of the pre-short listing visit is to appraise whether you would like to apply for the job.The interview itself doesn’t formally start at this point however impressions made by you during your visit will stay with you if you decide to go for. It is sensible to have done some standard reading about the hospital and post before you meet the clinical director. Generally speaking you should approach this visit with a similar attitude to the pre-interview visit.

Some sections have unspoken rules that they will not consider a consultant orthopaedic interview application for short-listing unless they have made a pre shortlisting visit.
