Far from the Beaten Track on Cayman Brac

Brackers, the inhabitants of Cayman Brac which is part of the Cayman Islands, are rightly proud of their 14 square mile island. Despite its small size, Cayman Brac offers its visitors a wealth of adventure sports activities to choose from.

The clear waters with ship wrecks and walls in the reefs surrounding the island are favorite diving spots among water sports enthusiasts. Fishing in the sea surrounding the island is said to be rewarding too. Hiking and walking along the various trails on the island attract bird watchers and nature lovers. Bicycling along the trails is a popular option too Cave exploration in the caves around the island on the bluff which looms large over the island’s landscape offers tourists an adventure far from the beaten track.

Though there are hundreds of caves in the limestone ridge that runs from one end of the island to the other, only some of these are easily accessible for cave exploration.. Most famous among these is Rebecca’s Cave, a cave which served as a shelter to the beleaguered Brackers during a raging storm. The cave is named after an infant who died of exposure during the hurricane and was buried here,

Hundreds of bats suspended from the nooks and crannies in the ceiling welcome enthusiasts of cave exploration to Bats Cave giving them the impression of being on the sets of a horror film. Eerie sights of dangling roots and twisted vines and glistening stalactites and jagged rocks reinforce the impression,

Peter’s Cave is more popular for the excellent views that one has of Spot Bay from Peter’s Outlook. Photographs of the vistas from the cave give the impression of a view from a rainforest, thanks to the overhanging plants and canopy of trees.

Nani’s Cave,Skull Cave, Neptune’s lair are some of the other cave exploration sites.Visitors are advised to wear shoes with a good grip and knee caps and carry flash lights as sometimes visibility is poor along the pathways
