Making Life Worth It

Two-Hand Tournament

A few nights ago, I had a nice poker online epiphany. I was having a hugely slow night playing jeux de casino and I was getting tempted start playing with lousy hole cards. I had to sit back and ask myself “Do I want to win hands, or do I want to win money?”

It’s hard to sit back and watch people playing online poker when you’re not getting any decent cards. When you’re getting garbage, it’s tough to watch everyone else betting and making moves, and it starts to get tempting to jump into the fray regardless of your cards. I’d spent the whole evening folding lousy cards and stealing enough blinds to stay in the game, when my patience was at an end. I was getting ready to play my 2-4 “just to see what happens” when I thought about what I was doing. Even if I made a pair (which wasn’t likely), I’d almost certainly have an over card threatening my hand, and even if I made a straight (even less likely), there’d be a higher straight possibility right there. I ended up folding my garbage, and the following hand yielded at K-Q suited that turned into a flush. I called two other players all-in (both had lower flushes) tripled my stack, and ended up mostly folding for another hour and a half before winning the game with trip 10’s. It only took two big hands (and a ton of patience) to win the table It can be tempting to try and win as many pots as possible, but remember that in poker, the winner is the one who wins the most money, not the most pots.
