An award letter also known as a varsity letter or chenille letter originated in 1865, when the Harvard baseball team took the initiative to embroider an old English ‘H’ in single color on their gray flannel shirt and has now become the most popular way to show team spirit and accomplishment. It is mostly embroidered on a jacket although it was earlier also embroidered on cardigans or pullovers.
These jackets are called letter jackets, letterman jackets, varsity jackets, or cheerleading sweaters. Several media like felt insignia, modeled pins, or bars are added to make the design more ornamental and stylized. Nevertheless, the varsity chenille letter double color still remains a simple yet very effective form of varsity monogram design.
Varsity letter
One color chenille/two color felt or varsity letter – two color chenille/one color felt, gives enough freedom to the designer of the monogram to experiment with fonts, color combinations and other embellishments like felt insignia, modeled pins, or bars are added to make the design more ornamental without making the design too complicated.
