Who Is Considered To Be A “Philanthropist”?
A philanthropist is someone who continually does acts of donating money, time, goods, and/or efforts to support a charitable endeavor usually over an extended period of time and with a defined goal in mind. A philanthropist may engage himself in any activity that is meant to promote good and/or improve the quality of life of others. Typically, philanthropists are wealthy individuals or organizations but people who are from lower socio-economic classes who nonetheless do good deeds can also be considered philanthropists, and are certainly not unheard of.As has been before, philanthropy is a major source of financial resource for educational, medical, artistic, religious, economic, social and humanitarian initiatives. Nowadays, though, with the rise of philanthro-capitalism, philanthropists have gained the spotlight as their activities are now being given attention by the media. Small surprise, since some of them actually have this goal in mind. There are, needless to say, others that busy themselves with philanthropic endeavors simply because of the quintessential need to reach out to others and give a part of themselves. Some examples of well-known philanthropists, apart from the typically billionaire:• Paul David Hewson – known more popularly as Bono. He is the main vocalist of the band U2 and has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts. • Mother Teresa – recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 and beatified by Pope John Paul II after her death for her humanitarian work.
