Making Life Worth It

Boating and sailing

The terms boating and sailing encompass a huge range of recreational activity. When we talk about boating, it usually means some sort of watercraft that is powered by an engine. Many people enjoy using motor boats to water ski, wakeboard, kneeboard, or pull an inner tube. Boating provides great family friendly recreation and a chance to enjoy the summer sun. Boats are also used by those who enjoy fishing. Some fishing boats are small and designed for an afternoon on the lake. Others are designed to take daring deep sea fishermen out onto the ocean.

Boating and sailing are a little bit different, because the watercrafts involved in sailing are powered by wind instead of a motor. Learning to sail is a little more of a challenge than learning to operate a motor boat. Most sail boats are propelled by either one or two sails to catch the wind, and a rudder in the back of the boat. Dinghy racing is a competitive sport involving small sail boats. It takes a great deal of skill to maneuver a sail boat in a race. There are plenty of sailors who sail only for enjoyment and recreation. The only downfall of sailing is that the boats are totally dependent on wind. On a perfectly calm day sailors have to relax on the shore.
